Happy New Year- part 2! A year ago today, I began something wonderful! Although I had been doing youth ministry for awhile, a year ago I made the transition to officially go part- time at my other job so I could focus more on the youth and the church. As I went through the year, I realized that part of focusing on the youth and helping them along their spiritual journey was taking time for myself and focusing more on my spiritual journey. (that's where this blog came from)
This has been such an amazing year! I have seen so many wonderful things and experienced so many wonderful gifts from God! I have met and gotten to know so many people- teens and adults- on a deeper level because I have been able to share with them and they have been able to share with me. I have welcomed teens to the group who didn't know God. I'm not sure if there is a greater joy than sharing God's love with someone who doesn't know about it, seeing them get baptised, and join the church!
All that being said, I am so excited for a new year to come! If this past year was so amazing, I can't imagine what is coming next! I'm sure it won't always be perfect. 2011 wasn't perfect. But, it was all a journey to where I am today.
Someone just posted a song on facebook and dedicated it to the children's ministry director and to me. I hadn't heard it before. "I Was Here", by Beyonce. It's about making a mark on the world and a positive impact on others. What a great way to start 2012! I have been blessed in 2011. My plan for 2012 is to be a blessing to others in some way.
Blessings,
Jennifer
As my daily devotion time, I'm going to write, instead of read someone else's, daily miracles. My hope is, that by doing this, I will enrich my journey and awareness of God in the little things in my life and also encourage others to do the same. I encourage you to share your comments and stories of things that you encounter along your journey.
Blessings,
Jennifer

Happy New Year!
It's 2012! Happy New Year! I can't wait to see what God has in store for me next year!
First of all, where did I see God today? New Year's Eve Day I got to sleep in! I never get to sleep in. There is always some reason I have to get up. But, this morning, I had no reason I had to get up and I actually was able to sleep. That was a blessing to start my day. Of course, not being used to sleeping in, I felt like my day was half gone by the time I got up. And, then it flew by!
Tonight was to be New Year's at my house for my sister's family, any youth who wanted to come over, along with any parents or anyone else, and the 3 of us (my husband, son, and me). Unfortunately, my brother- in- law was admitted to the hospital today. So, that changed the plan for them this evening. I'm praying God is with them as I know how stressful that can be for everyone.
So, tonight, I ended up with about a dozen youth coming by, along with the parent of one of them. There was a time when New Year's was a "grown up" time to go out and hang out and have a few drinks. Tonight, I made snacks, kids brought more snacks, they drank pop, and watched silly things on the computer and played games. I played cards- which I have been really wanting to do. So, it was a great night!
As I said a few weeks ago after movie night, what a blessing it is to have these youth who want to hang out in a positive, safe environment rather than going out and doing things they shouldn't be doing! 7 of them are spending the night so they can go to church with me in the morning! (well, partially so they can go to church and probably partially because their parents weren't too excited about picking them up after midnight!) So, not only are they having good clean fun tonight, but they are starting 2012 by going to church!
So, where is God today? He's with these youth who are making good choices in a world where it's sometimes easier to make bad ones. And, for that, I grateful!
Blessings,
Jennifer

Prayer Service
Tonight was the first of what I hope will be many prayer services for the city I live in. For the last few years, unemployment, drugs, and poverty have become a growing problem that a lot of people have tried to sweep under the rug. Luckily, it's not being swept under anymore. It's being talked about. And, now, churches of all denominations are coming together and praying about it!
I was really tired this evening. I was tempted to stay home and go to bed. But, instead, I got up and went to the prayer service. I even got to be a part of it since the choir had singers from several churches. The sanctuary looked pretty full- which is a great turnout for an evening in between Christmas and New Years. There were over 200 people there.
The beginning of the service had music, scripture, and a message. Then, we were asked to get in small groups- to turn around in our pews- and pray together. Someone would start by leading us in a prayer for the city, the youth, or our churches. Then, we prayed together. By being a part of the choir, I had the blessing of being able to see out in the sanctuary- to witness people from all different denominations, different walks of life, strangers and friends all praying together. What a beautiful sight to see!
Things are happening here! When people all come together and decide they are going to focus on God and ask Him for guidance in making decisions and helping others, good things will come of it! Tonight as I looked out and saw people all praying together, I knew God was in the room.

Teen Center
A week or 2 ago, I went to a round table discussion on what to do about the drug problem in our city. I went there with the thought that there needed to be more positive places for teens to go- places to keep teens occupied and out of trouble. While there, I found out that's in the works. As I was driving home with my son, I mentioned that I would enjoy doing something to help get that going.
Forward to a few days ago. While at my in-laws, I saw an ad for a teen center. Today, I called and found out it is coming very soon- like next week! And, they are looking for people to help get it going. When I called to find out where it is going to be, I found out it was going to be at the place I was headed to for a present for my son- the YMCA. My son has been wanting us to rejoin so I was on my way there to sign up. So, I talked to the person coordinating the opening. So far, things are looking good for me to be some part of the center. It's something I feel strongly about needing here and that the right people need to be there. I'm excited to see if this is a path God will lead me down. So, right now I feel strongly led down that path, but I am sure I will have a definitive answer from Him soon.
So, where is God today? I think I know but I'm waiting to find out for sure soon!

Gift bags
What a great day! Christmas Eve! (It's actually Christmas now!) It was a day filled with family, friends, and baby Jesus!
I spent half of the day at my in- law's. As I was leaving to go to church late this afternoon, I mentioned that I was going to spend the time between services wrapping and that I was bummed because our supply of gift bags had run out. My mother- in- law told me she had a bunch of extras so I happily left with a new supply of gift bags. Why is this important?
As I was driving away, I realized I now didn't need to spend that time wrapping. I had more time to do other things. I enjoyed a 5:00 family service at my church- the message of anticipating Jesus, of the realization of the amazing gift God gave us, and bringing it all to something we can understand by relating it to parents welcoming their own child into this world and the wonder of it all. A tiny helpless child bringing hope to so many over 2000 years later! The music was great, as always, and I got to hear my son play in the band.
Then, since I didn't have hours of wrapping to do, I decided to join my in- law's, nieces, and my husband's grandma for a service at the church I used to go to. It was a lovely service, too. The message of unexpected visitors and always welcoming others by talking about the innkeeper made me think of my grandma, who was the most hospitable person I ever knew. And, also it made me think of this holiday season and how it has been a joy to share it not only with family, but to invite friends who didn't have a place to go on a holiday. That has been a great joy and has added to our celebrations. The music was beautiful- a children's choir and ending with the Hallelujah Chorus!
After that, it was back to my church for another service. This was the more traditional service and I enjoyed the music and the children's choir. On my way into the sanctuary, I heard a member say her husband was in the hospital. My heart went out to her as I remember a few years back when I was her. Hospitals are no fun on Christmas! I sat by some good friends and shared some smiles and laughs. Afterwards, one of my youth gave me a gift from all of the youth, a beautiful wind chime.
I realize how blessed I am to be surrounded by so many wonderful people- to love and be loved! I hope that those of you reading this know that you are loved, that God is here among us in so many ways, and, that on this day, we celebrate the greatest gift of love, a baby born to save us all!
Blessings of hope, peace, joy, and love to all,
Jennifer

Message
My husband had an MRI today. It's his 2nd one lately and it's not a fun thing for him to do with back pain. We're hoping this will help figure out what can be done to help him get rid of the intense pain he's constantly in.
So, they took him back to start the test and I was sitting alone in a waiting room. I'm used to hospitals and waiting rooms. But, knowing that my husband was anxious today was making me anxious. So, I did what I do best to pass the time. I opened up my computer to check my e-mail, do some work, and check my facebook. I had a message! I opened it and saw it was from someone I've been connecting with recently- since we got to know each other through the Tuesday class and are joining a new group together.
She wrote to tell me she and her husband pray for my husband every day. And, that recently she had a health concern that God took care of for her. Just hearing people tell me that they are praying was such a comfort in that exact moment!
As I'm writing this, I just clicked back to check something in her note and saw she had written another. She said she had been meaning to write several times but that she hadn't. And, at that moment, God didn't let her have a choice in sending that message to me!
What a wonderful God to send people along our path to help us, encourage us, and pray for us when we need it most! Today I am thanking God for His blessings to my friend and for His blessing of having her share it with me!

White Christmas
Tonight was classic Christmas movie night at my house. I invited the youth to come over if they wanted to watch movies like White Christmas and Miracle On 34th Street. I had a list of movies we could watch and planned to watch White Christmas and one other one. Key word in that sentence being "planned". I had warned them all that we were watching classics and that our regular movie night is this Friday. They must have missed that part.
Luckily, I've seen White Christmas enough to know what was happening even when it was too loud in the room to hear! They really weren't interested in movies at all. And, for awhile I was kind of disappointed since I love the classics. But, looking back, there are so many things teens could be doing on their first day of Christmas break and they chose to hang out at their youth leaders house with their youth group. So, how could I be disappointed in that? There was a lot of laughter, a lot of silliness, and just random chatter. They weren't even on computers! They were just spending time with friends.
So, maybe tonight didn't go as I planned. Maybe I didn't get to share my classic movies with them. But, maybe they got a lot more out of just spending time with friends, coming over and knowing there is a safe place where they can come and have some good clean fun. That reminds me once again that God has given me a precious gift by being a youth leader for some amazing teens. And, God has also given me a great responsibility by being a youth leader for some amazing teens.
So, where was God today? He was here after things all settled down helping me realize that tonight was a great night- with or without White Christmas! And, He is in each one of those teens who made the decision to come hang out here rather than somewhere else tonight.

Monday
Today I met with a very dynamic person! We spoke last week at a meeting and she had some ideas she wanted to talk to me about. She had a hard life in her past. But, she is now using that to help others get away from a hard life. The purpose of the meeting we met at was to help youth find other alternatives to living a hard life.
So, today we met to talk about her ideas. She wants to use a room at the church to have a Bible study for women recovering from addictions. What a great way to help our community! It's such a great thing to see people who not only learn from their past but also teach others from their past! She has been a blessing to many and I feel this upcoming year she will be a blessing to me as we work together to better our community.
I believe God is using us to help others in the community and I can't wait to see what His plans are!
Blessings,
Jennifer

Sunday
Today was the day I'd been waiting for! Today marked the day that 4 generations have sung in the same Handel's Messiah. After a crazy rehearsal season of different conductors due to my uncle's health, the performance was beautiful! There was an excitement and a love for sharing the greatest story ever told with so many people!
Before we went up to perform, my brother- in- law, who was conducting, shared with us that he had been participating in this for so many years because he wanted to share the story and that we were all about to do that. For me, it was reiterating what I'd been feeling. But for some, it was something that made an impact on them both that they were about to do that and that their director was focused on that.
So, today, God was listening to His story. And, as I mentioned a few days ago, I'm hoping that story was heard by some people who needed to hear it.

Jennifer

Saturday
It's Christmastime! I sang the Messiah Sunday so it's now officially Christmas! I know I've missed a few days on here. But, I've been thinking about what I wanted to say and being aware of the God moments I've experienced. Unfortunately, the last few days I've come home and been too exhausted to even write! So, here goes!
Saturday-
Tonight was great fun! I was supposed to go to a work Christmas party. But, since my husband wasn't up to it, I decided not to go either. Instead, I went on a mission with my son, several youth, and another parent. For awhile now my son has been planning a prank on some of the youth volunteers. And, tonight was the night! We went to their house while they were at dinner and decorated their house with lights galore! Then, we moved their blowup Santa so that he was hugging Frosty. It was great fun filled with lots of laughter. Afterwards, we came back to my house for hot chocolate and to wait for them to get home and see their new decorations.
How is this God? I believe God has a sense of humor. I believe God likes to see His children laughing and having fun just being together. So, tonight, I saw God in the fun and laughter of time spent with friends.
Blessings,
Jennifer

Angels
I read an article someone posted this morning. It seems angels have been all over lately- especially in Kmart. They've been paying off people's layaway payments. Figuring that most lay aways are done at Christmas for children's toys, it seems some parents are getting a Christmas gift themselves when they get to the store.
It reminded me of a Christmas a long time ago when my son was little. I was shopping at the toy store at a local mall. I wasn't doing the greatest financially, but I was ok. I got up to the register and tried to pay for my son's Christmas toys. There was some error and my card didn't go through. Luckily, there was an ATM nearby so I told them I'd be right back with the cash. By the time I got back to pay for everything, some kind person had paid for everything! I tried to find the person, but it was impossible. To me, that's the meaning of Christmas- being kind and loving to everyone whether we know them or not.
So, during this season of advent, I see God in the kindness of strangers.
Luke 10:37
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

Christmas Story
Since I didn't get to write last night, I'm going to share about yesterday. I got home pretty late from rehearsal for Handel's Messiah. Tomorrow is our final rehearsal and we'll have an audience there and then our performance is Sunday. Last night we went through all of the choruses that we're singing.
As I sang, I listened to the words and thought to myself, "this is such a beautiful piece of music. I am praying that somebody comes to listen to the music and finds the words to be even more beautiful." What I mean is that I'm hoping someone comes because they appreciate classical music but as they hear it, they come to understand the message and turn to God realizing that this message is the story of how God has saved us. So, as I sing tomorrow and Sunday, I know God will be listening. And, I'm hoping others will be hearing the words we're singing. I'll probably never know if someones life will change or if someone who needs to hear the message of God will hear it there. But, that's what I would like to think and that's how I'll be singing- like I'm telling the story of Jesus' life to someone who needs to hear it.
I can't wait! I was thinking the other day about the Christmas story. We hear it every year. If it ever gets old to hear it, and even if it doesn't, finding someone who has never heard it and sharing it with them will probably be an awesome way to celebrate Christmas! I'm going to try to find someone to share it with in the next week.

I'm going to try to find someone to share it with in the next week.

Prayer
Tonight was our Wednesday night programming at church. A family that has been coming for the past few years has recently brought the dad's 2 sons into their home. They are middle school age and have had a rough time while living with their mother. So, when their step mom talked to them about coming to church they wanted nothing to do with it. Since then, they have come on Wednesday nights a few times and to our Parent's Afternoon Out last weekend.
Tonight, we were planning on caroling but the rain kept us indoors. So, we called some of our congregation that doesn't get out much or who have had a rough time this year and we sang to them. I think that was even more meaningful than walking down the street from our church and singing. When we walked down the street the past few years, nobody, or very few actually opened their doors and heard us. Last night, we shared Christmas with those that really needed some extra joy in their lives!
During our time together, I overheard one of the new boys ask the one leading if they could say the prayer. I wasn't sure what they were talking about, but she said yes they would do it before everyone left. Well, cookies and hot chocolate after singing, along with excited children and parents picking them up made saying the prayer he had referred to not happen. So, as we were leaving a little later, I was talking to that family and he remembered it. That's when his step mom explained that earlier that day they were one of the first to drive by a horrific accident where someone had died and was halfway out of the car. What a terrible thing for a young boy to see! And, he had asked if they could pray for her family. So, I gathered the youth that was still upstairs and we stood right there by the door and prayed for them.
This boy who wanted nothing to do with church a few weeks ago now has the first instinct to pray for people when something happens. To me, God is working in this boy's life even if he doesn't realize it or if he's not ready to admit it. I can't wait to see what happens as he spends more time learning about God!

C
Today was rough. When you're counting on an answer being "A" or "B", having the answer "C" really throws you off! My husband is having health issues and today was the appointment that I was planning on finding out which of two options the doctor was going to do to treat him and make things better. Unfortunately, he's not sure what he can do and needs to do more tests and then possibly he will know what to do, although he seemed more likely to send him somewhere to manage rather than treat his issue. This was not the answer either of us wanted.
So, today is a day where I feel faith has to come in. I mean, I see God in things that happen in my life and in other people. But, if that was constant, there would be no need for faith, would there? If everything was always perfect and we were perfect, along with everyone else, how would we grow spiritually or learn to depend on Him? And, it usually seems that in times of despair, people tend to reach out and strengthen their relationship with God, praying more, sharing with others more, and relying on Him more. The reverse of that would be when life is smooth and we tend to then think we can handle thins on our own, forgetting He's in charge. So, today, I'm feeling that I see God not in an instance or a person. I see God in my faith that even when it doesn't seem like He's here, I know He is. Even in the struggles, He's walking beside us.
Hebrews 11:1
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Roundtable
Tonight my son and I went to a roundtable discussion about the drug problem in our city and what we need to do about it. It was the first one I had heard about, but the third of the series. So, I was hesitant to jump in since I hadn't been to all of them. But, I feel it's important to fight this problem and save the youth of our community from battling this. So, I went. I'm glad I did!
It wasn't just politics. It wasn't just churches. It was a room filled with people from all different places but they were all there because they love youth and want to do whatever they can to help them. Those are my kind of people! As we discussed things tonight, it seems we have a lot of programs, we have a lot of opportunities for volunteers, and we have a lot of interest in helping youth. The problem is that it's the best kept secret in town. Nobody knows what anyone else is doing or what is out there to share with those needing the resources. If that turns out to be the case, we are further ahead, both financially and project wise, than we thought we were! What a great thing!
I met someone I'd been communicating with for awhile. She had her share of hardships but has turned them into blessings. I mentioned a program that's being started by several churches, including mine. Then someone spoke up and said he's working on that and I realized I get e-mails forwarded to me from him. Afterwards, he told me he was planning on going there just to listen but since I brought the program up, he spoke up. And, people were very excited about it.
I'm typically a shy person, especially in a new situation where I don't know everyone. But, tonight, I spoke up. When it comes to taking care of the youth and doing things to make things better for them, somehow my shyness fades. And, that's where I feel God giving me what I need to what I need to do.

Caroling
Tonight was our annual Christmas caroling to celebrate the 3rd week of advent- joy! I got the list of our members in nursing homes or assisted living places. There were extra cookies from this morning's service so we packed them and attached a candy cane for each person. We signed cards. And then, off we went!
I know some of the youth aren't excited about singing. But, tonight as I was rushing around getting things ready, youth kept coming! And, thanks to God, so did adults who were willing to drive! That in itself made my day. I was not sure I'd have a great turnout.
As we went to each home or place, we sang 3 songs and wished them all "Merry Christmas!" As we piled into each place, I noticed they were all singing! Maybe not at the first place, but the Christmas spirit was contagious. And, as the youth could see the reactions of those who were listening, they realized that they were spreading joy. They were making a difference to somebody else. We had people listen to us, sing with us, and we had a few tears of joy shed.
When we got back to the youth house, we gathered to talk about joy. And, to me it was evident that there was a mood of joy and excitement in the room. The teens were proud and happy about what they had spent the last 3 hours doing. So, even if they didn't start out excited about singing, by the end of the night, they realized that wasn't what it was about at all. They realized it was about giving of their time, sharing joy, and letting someone else know that they were cared about and loved. And, when that happens, I know God is present to share in the joy!
Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Bubbles
This morning started week 3 of advent- JOY! I have truly felt joyful today! And, since the pastor said where there is joy there is God, He has been with me all day.
After getting ready and heading to church, I was greeted with bubbles! Yep, bubbles! As part of our service of joy, we all got a thing of bubbles to blow anytime we felt joyful. I was amazed at how happy bubbles made me- and everyone else! I don't think it's possible to blow bubbles with a sad face! The music was uplifting, the message was uplifting, and there were bubbles! So I was off to a good start.
Then it was time for my new parenting small group. It's small- 2 parents small. We invited our kids to join us today. We had great discussion- with both parents and kids sharing honestly with each other and committing to be positive with each other. I shared with you the 30 day challenge I wanted to start. I must admit, I hadn't started yet. So, we decided as a group to do it as parents and teens and to hold each other accountable. We're also committing to sharing positive messages at least 5 times during the day. So, although there were few, we accomplished alot! And, that's what counts!
My son and I went to lunch and then just hung out and did random errands. It was good just hanging out with him. That makes me happy.
So, today, God was with me, filling me with joy, and blessing me this holiday season.
Psalm 9:2
I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High

Cookies
Today was Parent's Afternoon Out. Children of all ages came to the church to celebrate baby Jesus' birthday while their parent's finished up shopping, had some quiet time, or spent time with each other. Sometimes as we get older, we forget the excitement of Christmas. Spending time with little ones is a great way to get a reminder that this is an exciting time. It's not time to be stressed or frantically shopping or worried about which family member is arguing with which family member. Christmas is about love.
Today, the kids were so excited to make cookies for our Christmas Eve service. They all worked together stirring, cracking eggs, and rolling dough. They carefully thought about which cookie cutters they wanted to use- stars, Christmas trees, angels, snowmen. This is what we should all be doing right now- preparing for Christmas, working together, excitedly getting ready for baby Jesus!
Today, God used the hearts of children to remind the grownups how to celebrate the reason for the season.
Luke 2:12
This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger.”

Changes
A few weeks ago, I was pretty stressed about work- not my youth job, my part time job. After almost 10 years, my boss told me she was considering that it might be time for me to stop doing part of my job and have others doing it instead. It's something I have done at least once a week for 10 years. So, it really made me wonder about my job, and question what my future there would be if that became a reality.
Today, I started training people on how to do it. It has become a reality. But, I've let go of the stress and fear for my future. I've decided to let God handle it. Today, I realized a lot of things. For 10 years, I've been tied down to 2 deadlines every week. This has given me added stress, kept me from doing things, and caused me to have some very long work days in order to get things done on time. After everyone is trained and that is no longer part of my job, I will have even more flexibility in my schedule. I'll be able to take time off easier. When I need to be done on a Friday, I can be. And, no more getting up early Saturday just to get something in before it's too late! Yes, things seem to be looking up, now!
What am I going to do instead? Projects! All of the little things I like to do and never have time to do will now get put on my "to do" list and I'll be able to accomplish them. I'm not excited about more office time. But, if I'm planning and accomplishing projects, I'll be happy.
So, what seemed like the end has become a new beginning. And, I'm pretty sure, God knew what I needed before I did. Funny how that usually works out!
Daniel 2:21
God is the one who changes times and eras, who dethrones one king, only to establish another, who grants wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those with insight

Music
I just heard a new Christmas song, It's That Time Again! It brought happy thoughts to my mind. One of the singers was the amazing man we did work for during our first mission trip. During that week, I was inspired, encouraged, and amazed by this man and his love and devotion for God even through all of the trials of his life. To this day, when I hear "Amazing Grace", it takes me back to his living room surrounded by the youth and other volunteers, listening to him share his story, hearing him sing those beautiful words straight from his heart and into ours.
Music can have that affect on me. Some music brings back not just the words I'm singing to my mind, but a moment in time that is instilled in me. Some are old hymns I remember hearing as a child, some are newer songs that touched me by hearing the words I needed to hear when I needed to hear them,
Tonight was Messiah rehearsal night. And, each chorus, each solo, has a special memory attached to it. As a whole, the Messiah is a gift to those who hear it. But, to me, it's a gift for me to sing because it's such a beautiful way to share God's message in a way I couldn't do on my own. As much as I like to write, I could never put God's message into such beauty.
So, today, in several ways during different times during the day, I've heard God through the music, seen Him through the visions that music has given me.
Ephesians 5:18- 19 Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Speakers
Information overload! Today was the second day of my youth conference. I love getting to spend 2 days learning, becoming reenergized, and motivated to be a better person! Today, I heard several amazing people talk. And, by hearing their stories, I am inspired to continue my journey with my youth, knowing even on the tough days, God is working for their future.
The first speaker had us all stand up with outstretched arms and take 3 deep breaths. Then we repeated this, "I have the mark of greatness upon me. Life is full of greatness and endless possibilities. I deserve the best." He recommends doing this 3 times a day for 30 days and encouraging others to do it, too. So, tomorrow is day 1! By telling youth they have the mark of greatness no matter how they are currently acting, he says we have the power to change their lives. I believe that's true. Everyone has potential no matter what situation they are in. I feel God used this session to give me, as well as everyone else there, tools to help change lives by encouraging and empowering youth.
The other speaker who inspired me today was a teacher- not just any teacher. She was the person who inspired the movie "The Freedom Writers" after she published a book written by her students about their lives in violent neighborhoods surrounded by drugs, gangs, and death. She motivated these students to read, write, and achieve their goals. To hear her story, rather the stories of the youth who had her as a teacher, is a blessing. She never gave up on her students. She worked to figure out ways to teach them in ways that they would understand and care about what they were learning. But, I think the key is that she made them realize that she actually cared in them and believed in them. And, I think that's what any teen wants. Her classroom was their place to feel safe and whole, to be seen and to see what else is out in the world.
These last 2 days, God has been in the flashes of inspiration, the tidbits of knowledge I can use to help my youth, and the words of encouragement and wisdom I heard from the speakers.
Habakkuk 1:5
[ The Lord’s Reply ] The Lord replied, “Look around at the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.

Serenity
My friend started writing today. Her blog is about her year long quest for serenity, a quest to let go of anger and enjoy the simple pleasures God has given us. As we chatted this evening, it seems it's been on her heart for awhile but today was the day she made up her mind to start. And, I know God was part of that decision. I know He's walking beside her along her journey, encouraging her as she walks. I hope that writing is a way for her to see that encouragement, to see what is happening in her life that God has blessed upon her.
She has been a blessing in my life and has helped me along my journey. I don't think she realizes the impact she has on others. But, she is a witness to the power God can have to help us overcome obstacles, to share our faith, and trust in God's plan. At a time when I was struggling, she was put in my path. It wasn't that I didn't believe in God or anything like that, I just didn't know His direction for me. And, I was losing my spiritual self. Just by having spiritual conversations with her, by sharing stories and experiences, she helped me grow as a person. She helped me become much more outgoing in my spiritual life and much more open with others about my religion. I saw something in her that I wanted, too- to share how God was working in me with others. Before that, people knew I was Christian... I think. Work was work and life was life. Everything was separate. Today I hope that's not the case.
And so, as I talked to her tonight and saw that she is still continuing to work on her life and relationship with God, I know He's there, an anxious partner in her plan.

Squirrels
Last night was youth group. After being sick all weekend, I wasn't sure how it would go. I must admit, my younger group had moments of squirrelyness- quite a few moments! We talked about advent- hope and peace, which are the first 2 weeks since I wasn't there last week. But, in the midst of those moments, there were glimmers of hope! The youth shared ways they brought hope to others and ideas of how they could help others. During candle time, some of the youth opened up and shared concerns that were on their hearts and minds as they have not done before. And, after a pretty quiet first attempt at a new song, the second time, I heard most of the group singing! I've learned on the nights that I think nobody heard a word, that's when I usually find out later that somebody was really impacted by something we discussed.
I try to have projects for the weekly themes. For the week of hope it's always ringing bells for the Salvation Army. A lot of my youth weren't able to make the Saturday date. But, a friend of one of my regulars sent me a message last week saying he was interested in ringing. He's come to a couple fun things we've had in the past. So, when he sent me a message saying he'd definitely be there Saturday at 6, I wondered how that would go. That time slot was the "singing slot". The adult who volunteered for that time said she wanted to sing with the youth. There are only a few in my group who would jump at the chance for that. And, this middle school boy who didn't know what he was getting into was very happy to be there. He shared on Sunday how he felt good for helping others. And, I heard from several others who stopped by, and the adult there, that he was happy to sing Christmas songs with her. What a joy to have a new youth who is not afraid to share!
Sometimes God is in the background working quietly behind the scenes. Other times, He's right out there singing and serving! This weekend, I saw both in my youth.
2 Chronicles 15:15
All Judah was delighted with the solemn pledge because they had sworn it with all their hearts. When they enthusiastically sought God, he was found by them, and the LORD gave them peace on every side
Blessings,
Jennifer

Gracie
The flu landed at my house. Luckily, so far it just landed on me. I spent most of the last few days in bed. I'm not good at being sick. I'm a big baby, actually.
So, in all of my exhaustion and misery, where was God? First of all, it wouldn't be right not to mention my husband and son and all they have done to take care of me. But, today I want to talk about another special someone.
Gracie was with my the entire time I was in bed. She was right next to me. She didn't care that I wasn't looking my best. She didn't care if I wasn't paying attention to her the whole time. She was just here unconditionally loving me. To me, she is a perfect example of how we should all act as Christians. She didn't wait until I did something for her to be nice to me. And, if anyone did something to her, I'm sure she would easily forgive them. If she thinks it's playtime and nobody has time to play, she tries again later. Unconditional love, forgiveness, persistence, faithfulness, and loyalty. Just because Gracie is a dog doesn't make her any less of a gift from God. I know God puts people in our path. I think sometimes, He puts 4 legged creatures in our path to comfort us, too.
Genesis 1:25
God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Blessings,
Jennifer

Messiah
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace!
This was my first rehearsal for the season. Christmas isn't really Christmas for me until I'm singing Handel's Messiah. So, my Christmas season started tonight. 100 people singing the most beautiful words with the most beautiful music ever written is truly a gift from God. Being able to be a part of that experience every year is a blessing. It's not just a performance the Sunday before Christmas, it's a weekly event to share an experience with others.
I was sad I missed the first rehearsal. It's always like a reunion. People I don't really know are so happy to see me. And, I'm so happy to see them. Each November we get together to spend one day a week together and then a Saturday and Sunday to perform. And, we have all become old friends. Sharing this gift with each other and sharing it with those in attendance has bonded us all. To us, we're not just singing, we're spreading the message of God, the story of Jesus and how He is our saviour.
As we rehearse each chorus, we are to be thinking of the meaning of the words we're singing. And, our director for 47 years has helped us by his interpretations of the music. "He was wounded for our iniquities. He was bruised". It's not supposed to sound all pretty- reflect that pain, he told us. And, somehow, through the years he has trained us to do just that. Each chorus is sung with his interpretation to reflect a feeling, an emotion. The final chorus is one word- amen. And, I can't remember a time I performed it that I got through the entire chorus with out being choked up. Imagining heaven, that's what I would like to hear when I get there. Even though our director is not able to direct this year for health reasons, his love of the music and of God, his emotion and expressions have been instilled in us so that we will be able to carry on to continue the message he has worked so hard to share.
So, where was God today, I think He was sitting there listening, smiling, enjoying hearing people lift up their voices in praise to Him and sharing His message.
Isaiah 9:6
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Blessings,
Jennifer
